Course Overview

Subsea pipelines have made a tremendous impact as a safe and effective transport system for offshore hydrocarbon exploration and production (E&P). There have been examples of subsea pipeline projects where the boundaries of materials requirements, construction and installation techniques, inspection and maintenance programmes have all been established and improved upon over the decades. Similarly, E&P continually breaches deeper and deeper waters; further improvements and innovation have been the keynote in these applications.

Objective:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Gain comprehensive insight into subsea pipeline routing, permits, and authorisations
Understand and perform pipeline mechanical design analyses and calculations
Select appropriate materials for subsea pipelines, considering corrosion protection systems
Learn pipeline construction and installation methods, tools, and best practices
Explore line pipe mechanical and corrosion protection systems used in offshore environments
Apply pre-commissioning and commissioning practices to ensure system readiness
Develop and implement pipeline integrity management practices to maintain long-term asset health
Enhance knowledge through practical working examples of pipeline design
Understand current and emerging best practices for offshore pipeline projects
Prepare for future challenges such as ageing assets, life extension, and pipeline decommissioning

Course Outline

Day 1: Industry Overview and Line pipe Manufacturing

Overview of the history and evolution of subsea pipelines in offshore hydrocarbon exploration and production
Review of industry codes, standards, and regulations governing subsea pipeline systems
Introduction to line pipe manufacturing processes and quality control practices
Understanding material selection criteria and compliance with regulatory frameworks

Day 2: Pipeline Design and Flow Assurance

Key prerequisites for pipeline projects including permits, authorisations, and seabed pre-sweeps
Fundamentals of subsea pipeline design, including mechanical design components and analyses
Documentation requirements for pipeline projects and the role of project deliverables
Overview of flow assurance considerations, including insulated systems and Direct Electrical Heating (DEH) technologies

Day 3: Flexible Pipe Engineering, Materials, and Construction Tools

Engineering principles and manufacturing requirements for flexible pipes in subsea applications
Selection and application of pipeline materials, including corrosion protection systems
Introduction to pipeline construction tools and equipment used in offshore operations
Identification of common pipeline problems and strategies for mitigation and resolution

Day 4: Construction, Installation, and Asset Care

Detailed exploration of pipeline construction and installation methodologies
Addressing construction and installation challenges with mitigation measures
Pre-commissioning and commissioning requirements following pipeline installation
Risk-based inspection, maintenance, and repair methodologies to ensure asset integrity
Understanding the "Duty to Care" philosophy in maintaining subsea assets

Day 5: Integrity Management and Future Considerations

Developing and implementing Pipeline and Subsea Integrity Management Systems (PSIMS)
Strategies for managing ageing assets and conducting life extension studies
Processes and considerations for pipeline decommissioning and abandonment
Course wrap-up and review of key learning outcomes
