Course Overview

Irrespective of the industry concerned, automotive, aerospace, petrochemical, process, production and manufacturing, lubricants are a critical and ‘invisible’ component responsible for the smooth running of either simple or complex machinery, equipment, systems and so forth. Importantly, as advanced technologies become more and more prevalent, the efficiency of lubricants and, thus equipment also becomes critical.

The essential function of any lubricant creates a physical interface between moving parts to provide a frictionless or, more practically, a reduction in friction between moving parts of the equipment in question—a typical example being automotive valves.

In addition, to providing a reduction in friction, lubricants also act in several other ways, namely: to prevent or mitigate wear of moving parts, wear prevention and/or wear, as a cooling medium and to minimise the effects of internal corrosion and cyclic fatigue.

Objective:

This course presents to delegates the fundamentals of lubricants, wear studies, their production and manufacture, properties of and lubricant materials characterisations, technical and commercial considerations for lubricants markets and the effect of lubricants concerning environmental considerations.

Health and safety requirements for lubricant production and use

Understanding the production and manufacturing process of lubricants

Lubricant materials characterisation - Reliability of lubricants:
Evaluating the reliability and performance of lubricants
Lubrication theory - Tribology – the study of wear:

Day 4:

The fundamental principles of lubrication theory
Tribology and the study of wear
How lubricants meet wear criteria

Day 5:

Lubricant design and selection process
Choosing the proper lubricant for a specific application
Health and safety management in the lubricant industry
Importance of implementing and following effective health and safety practices in the workplace
