Course Overview

Steam turbines of several types, which have widely varying configurations and applications. The course is devoted to operation characteristics and will as such cover the operating principles. With the help of extensive graphics and animation which provides a virtual exposure on Large Steam Turbines and Governors and other Control Systems.

Bearing types, functions, and maintenance practices.
Balancing techniques: finding and analysing the resultant vector.
Overview of multistage pumps and their integration with turbine systems.

Day 3: Selection, Sizing, and Thermodynamic Considerations

Principles for selecting and sizing steam turbines to ensure reliability.
Thermodynamic fundamentals and their application in steam turbines.
Steam water rates and their impact on performance.
Differences between condensing and backpressure turbines.
Understanding single-stage and multistage turbine types and their applications.

Day 4: Pressure-Velocity Compounding and Loss Analysis

How pressure and velocity compounding are achieved in steam turbines.
Analysing losses in steam turbines and their impact on efficiency.
Losses due to friction and residual velocity.
Mechanical friction losses and methods to minimize them.

Day 5: Troubleshooting and Materials of Construction
