How to build your career in Auditing?

No doubt that an auditing job is a great career choice. No matter the career prospect, the income and the opportunities for growth and advancement make an auditor an excellent position to dream about. If you are looking for a challenging and rewarding career in accounting, auditing is the right choice for you. Here are a few things you need to understand to step into this field.

First, it is essential to learn the job and the role of an auditor. Auditors are responsible for examining financial statements and other records to ensure they are accurate and compliant with applicable laws and regulations. They also play a vital role in identifying and controlling an organisation's financial health risks.

There are different types of auditors, like Internal Auditors, External Auditors, Information Technology Auditors, Environmental, Health and Safety Auditors etc. They exist in most industries and businesses. More corporates are hiring more diverse professional backgrounds into audit roles and providing training to keep them in the companies. Such requirements would direct the company's decision on a particular area. For instance, I.T. auditors would bring in strategic thinking to enhance the use of technology in a corporation and industry. Auditors with law and compliance professionals would bring the knowledge of governance and legal and regulation into the role.

To be an auditor, the individual must be detail-oriented, analytical and have strong problem-solving skills. Apart from obtaining professional certificates like Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), it also requires the auditor to have a high ethical standard. Due to the job nature, many professional audit associations require their members to conform to a code of ethics to avoid disputes.

In addition, gaining a unique skillset through specialist experience is the best way to take up the job. Whenever individuals have experience in an accounting firm, a public company, or a government agency, they may offer a job in other sectors as the company may need a specialist in other areas. Also, networking with other auditors to stay up-to-date on industry trends and build relationships that will benefit your career.
