A simple guide to the best Mini MBAs out there

The first mini MBA program was introduced back in 1949 at McGill University in Canada. Over the years, a number of mini-MBA programs sprung up throughout the UK and now, several US colleges and universities are offering similar programs. In addition, large organizations are also offering similar programs that are advertised to be like an MBA boot camp.

Mini MBA programmes are those management programmes that require less than 300-400 hours of study and in most cases they have a duration far less than that. Depending on the institution, the programme may span through a whole week with very intensive sessions (The in-person crash course). Other institutions would rather opt to have a month sessions and make it span through several months. Some of the institutions would prefer to offer online classes. As such, there is that variety so students who are interested in participating in such programmes just have to choose an institution with a programme that best suits their schedule.

Mini-MBAs, are typically non-credit certificate programs and commonly condensed versions of MBAs that aim to improve business and leadership skills in areas including short- and long-term planning, marketing, managing financial resources, conducting negotiations, human resources and technology development.

Though all programs will have a different curriculum, there are some basic things that you can expect to learn in a mini-MBA program. All programs will teach students the fundamentals of business. This includes business frameworks, models and other drivers that lead to success in an organization. Students will be given the tools to learn strategic thinking, they are learning how to cross-function in the workplace and will be taught new problem solving strategies. Students will also learn how to improve upon their negotiating skills, will learn proper networking, meet new people and obtain the knowledge needed to be a successful leader in the business world.

Career counsellors, however, stress that mini-MBAs aren't an MBA substitute, because they won't provide the full depth of business education.
