Top tips for building a successful digital marketing strategy

Building a successful digital marketing strategy can prove challenging.

After all, the term ‘digital marketing’ incorporates many different aspects of an online world, and businesses of all sizes need to understand how to market their services and products to prospective customers.

At London TFE, we run a series of marketing training courses, including our Digital Marketing Essentials course, that focuses on key strategies and making them work for your business.

Our expert training team have also been sharing their top digital marketing tips to help you define a successful digital marketing strategy:

Tip #1: Define your marketing motive

Defining the main objective of the marketing strategy should always be the first step. Knowing what you are trying to achieve will help you to decide the marketing tactics you should use - and measure the success of the campaign.

Here are some common marketing objectives to consider to guide your next marketing campaign:

  • Gain more leads
  • Increase the quality of leads
  • Increase the lifetime value of a customer
  • Improve brand awareness
  • Gain positive customer reviews
  • Increase customer spend

Tip #2: Optimise your website for mobile

Mobile website browsing accounts for 58.26% of all internet traffic in 2022 – making it essential that company websites are mobile-friendly. Optimising your website for mobile is key to increasing your traffic. We recommend running your website’s URL through Google’s mobile website checker to see if your site is mobile-friendly.

It’s also worth checking out your website on your smartphone. Is it easy to navigate? Are the buttons easily clickable? Is the text comfortable to read? These are all key factors that will affect the user experience of your website.

Tip #2: Update your content regularly

Every website wants to be on good terms with Google – and nothing makes the biggest search engine in the world happier than regularly updated content.

If your company website doesn’t already have a blog, it’s time to start one and share your knowledge with the world – and remember to write for humans, not Google robots – as search engines are sophisticated enough to pick out quality content from spam!

Speak to your customers to understand what questions they would like to know the answers to and provide them in the form of an informative blog.

Tip #3: Be visible on social media platforms

You can have the best products in the world – but if no one sees them then it is all in vain.

Building your presence on social media channels will help you reach your target audience. Do your research to understand which social media platforms your audience engage with. Millennials love Snapchat and TikTok, while Generation X are happier hanging out on Facebook and Twitter. If you want to reach other businesses, look at advertising on LinkedIn instead.

Tip #4: Get creative with your team

We believe that everyone in the organisation will have valid ideas and opinions.

Each department will have a unique take on what they believe your target audience wants. So, grab some pizza and invite representatives from each department to attend a creative meeting to brainstorm ideas – we guarantee you’ll uncover strategies that you haven’t already thought of!

Tip #5: Test, test, and test again!

No digital marketing campaign is set in stone – and not all techniques will work for all audiences. This is where testing is vital.

Want to discover if email marketing is more lucrative for your business than paid search ads? Then test both with a small budget, record the results and optimise your campaigns by doing more of what works – and cutting out what doesn’t.

Tip #6: Monitor success with analytics

By setting clear goals and key performance indicators at the start of your campaign, you’ll be able to identify both the strengths and areas for improvement in your digital marketing campaign. Take actionable steps based on the data gathered and optimise your campaign to maximise the results of your next campaign.
